I JUST WANTED TO SHOW BLACK WOMEN BEING CARE-FREE IN TOKYO. THAT'S IT.

I met the artist Mikayla Weary at a bar in Shinjuku. She invited me to her photographic exhibition called CAPTURE in Shibuya.

I was pleasantly surprised to see other black women (considering it's much harder in Japan). I met these beautiful women who came to see thought-provoking art and support Mikayla's art residency ending. We all were just happy to meet and talk and smile with each other. I met Elisa, a photographer whose work was featured in the exhibit and we immediately made plans to shoot something. Anything.

Mikayla offered her exhibit space (after hours) as a set-up. I met Erian (polo top), Chinaza (white sweater), and Alanah (amazing two piece skirt set) . I wasn't sure what I wanted anyone to even do....I'm never sure of my direction, but I knew I wanted movement. I knew I wanted to capture their goofiness and happiness even in an exhibit centered on the black image being used for destruction. I just wanted to see care-free black women in Tokyo who all were here for different reasons and still found each other.
